Matthew Pezzimenti has been a volunteer, serving at Good Samaritan Ministries (GSM) for over 20 years. We recently asked Matthew to share his journey of serving with GSM.

Matthew Pezzimenti has been a volunteer, serving at Good Samaritan Ministries (GSM) for over 20 years. He is a passionate man of God, preaching the gospel to our homeless neighbors. Along with being a self-employed businessman his entire life, Matthew has been married 42 years and has 2 daughters and 5 grandchildren!

We recently asked Matthew to share his journey of serving with GSM.

Q: How long have you volunteered with GSM? How do you volunteer at GSM?

Between 20-25 years – cooking hot meals and bagged lunches served through Our Daily Bread and the Melting Pot, and sharing the gospel. I also help with gathering items for coat and school supply drives.

Q: What motivated you to first volunteer at GSM?

Upon becoming a Christian, it was plain that Jesus’ heart was for the marginalized and the forgotten. We always seek opportunities to show the love of Jesus to the less fortunate.

I was 19 years old when I became a Christian. I grew up with a single dad after my mom died when I was 18 months old. Dad was in and out of jail. I was in a lot of trouble myself with everything from burglary and dope. A drug dealer I knew got saved and I watched his life change. We talked about Jesus and one night I decided to give my life to Christ.

Q: What is your favorite thing about volunteering at GSM?

Seeing an immediate impact through the investment of time and/or resources that we make in Jesus’ name.

Q: What have you learned about working with the homeless population?

Behind every what, there is a why. What someone is going through isn’t random. People have trauma and struggles that most people will never have to face. And by simply showing the love of Jesus, and then explaining the love of Jesus, most are receptive and open to the change that the gospel brings. Most people judge these people; by loving them, it takes down the wall.

Start by listening and meeting a need. People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care. Christianity isn’t passive. It’s active.

Q: Why would you recommend volunteering at GSM with a friend?

One simple reason is it’s part of the Great Commission. You’ll see in real time, through serving and giving, making a real impact in the lives of others. The need is great – the laborers are few.
